Welcome to the Department of Genetics

The Department of Genetics investigates the genetic, neuronal and behavioral foundations of learning and memory in the brain of the larva of Drosophila melanogaster.

The aim of this reserach is to understand how a simple brain, consisting of only about 10,000 neurons, receives, processes, and integrates information with other stimuli (learning) and stores information over time (memory) in order to adapt the behavior of the larva to its environment.

Anatomical techniques allow for the first time to reconstruct all synapses of all nerve cells in the brain of the larva (connectome, 3D electron microscopy). Neurogenetic tools enable targeted visualization (light microscopy) and functional manipulation of individually defined neurons (split-GAL4 method). In combination with high-resolution methods for automated behavioral analysis, therefore, unique tools are available to answer a central neurobiological question:
